Holiday Farm … is a fun place to learn …
One of our intentions at The Garden at Holiday Farm is to teach youngsters about growing food.
As an organic garden, we emphasize the idea that healthy soil grows healthy food, which in turn
grows healthy people. The focus is on vegetables, but we also teach basic biological concepts. We
want to show the kids that food doesn't just appear by magic, that careful planning, hard work,
thoughtful care, and basic biological processes are what produce our food.

With the arrival of Spring, we will be busy getting the organic vegetable garden started. We have
developed a new program that will involve your students in the real work of growing vegetables. It
is called Growing Great Vegetables. Our focus will be on vegetable seeds, seedlings, and soil.
We will explore the anatomy of 4 seed, visit the greenhouse and see the seedlings in their various
stages of development. Students will then get their hands dirty making soil blocks, and planting some
seedlings in the garden. As we work, we will talk about soil and what plants need to be healthy. They
talk about seeds, plants, and soil will be age appropriate. For example, with kindergardeners, we will
talk about how plants need light, water, and air to grow; with first graders we will do the some, but
add the term photosynthesis, with second graders we will add carbon dioxide instead of air, and so on.
Students should dress in clothes they don't mind getting dirty.
When we're done in the garden, the students will have a guided tour of the rest of the farm. On the tour
they will get to meet the Holiday Farm ducks, chickens, llamas, cows and horses. There might even be a
few eggs to collect.
